What Can We Earn on Medium?

I think it would surprise you to know.

I find myself strangely drawn to stories where a Medium writer talks honestly about their earnings. I don’t think we should hide it. I love transparency! I’ve heard it said that only 8% of writers on Medium earn over $100 a month.

I would like to know what that 8% is earning!

As far as I know, there is no rule stating that we shouldn’t talk about how much money we make. I think people are still reluctant because they’ve been told by employers over the years never to discuss what we make with other employees. Bottom line — we don’t work for Medium.

Can we just be honest?

My earnings since September 2018

I’ve been in the Medium Partner Program since the end of September 2018. I am one of the lucky ones who started earning from the beginning and I haven’t stopped. Although it’s been up and down like a rollercoaster, I think it is finally on an upward trend again.

October 2018

Staring on September 24th, 2018 through October 29th, 2018, I earned $48.55. For that period, I published 23 stories. I had 232 total fans, so I averaged $0.21 per fan.

I was completely surprised that I made any money the first month. I was still getting a feel for the platform and was posting some of my older work that was not quite very good. I felt great and couldn’t wait to see what I made in November.

November 2018

From October 29th, 2018 to November 26th, 2018, I earned $88.68. During that time, I published 26 stories and generated 309 fans for an average of $0.29 per fan.

I had one story about racism that did very well, which made my earnings go up. I was happy for the increase and felt like I could easily double it the next month, which was December.

December 2018

From November 27th, 2018 to December 31st, 2018, I did very well. I earned $193.09 from 17 stories and engaged 396 fans. I averaged $0.49 per fan, which was awesome!

I didn’t write as much this month due to many reasons. Basically, this was the beginning of a lull for me. I can only imagine how much I would have earned had I written more in December. I thought I would double it again the next month, which was January of 2019.

January 2019

If you talk to the writing community on Medium, the period of January 1st, 2019 to January 28th, 2019, was a dark time for earnings. I only earned $106.76 from 15 stories. I had great engagement though as I had 336 fans for an average of $0.32 per fan.

Medium cut the earnings per fan down, but in their defense, I totally dropped the ball and didn’t write very much. I completely take the blame for what happened, and I vowed to do better in February, which I have.

February 2019 so far

February 2019 so far has been a great month. In the first two weeks, I earned $122.67. I published a whopping 16 stories so far with 326 fans (this is a little skewed because I have not included this week’s payout). My average is $0.38 per fan which is up a little from last month.

I plan to finish the last two weeks strong, and I think I will do very well this month, even if the earnings per fan have gone down from December. I will update this story after the payout for the MPP tomorrow.

Can we earn?

It’s been proven time and time again that you can earn from Medium. On the high end, you could do very well, like Shannon Ashley. Shannon has been very forthcoming about how much she earns, and I for one have to thank her for it because it inspires me.

(Yes, I know I am promoting another writer’s work, but she is super nice, and I love her writing!)

For most of us, we probably will take a bit longer to make that kind of money, if we ever do. This very fact has got me thinking about me putting all my eggs in one basket. So far, I have been focusing on Medium only, but I am starting to feel like I need to start putting more work into things I own.

I have one blog, “Changing Mine, Changing Yours,” which I haven’t put much work into (it’s going to be turned into an anti-self-help blog), and an idea for another about making money blogging. I happen to know a lot about blogging, and I think its time I did something with all that knowledge. The new blog should be up some time in the next two weeks. I have been slowly building the first few posts for the website, and they are quite epic. It is understandably taking some time because the majority of my day is spent writing for Medium.

Whatever you decide to do — whether you are staying all-in on Medium, or you plan to diversify a bit — do it with your whole heart in it. Even with the work I’m putting in the new blogs, I still spend 6–8 Hours a day on Medium. I am going to continue doing what I need to do to become successful, and you should as well.

Good luck, and I will see you on Medium!
