When we are kids, and still have our whole lives ahead of us, and the future feels so far away, people who are 50 years old are ancient to us. They are grandparents with their pants pulled up too high and their dentures falling out when they blow out the candles on their birthday cake. A 50-year-old only has a few years to live and is sitting on a porch somewhere yelling at the neighborhood ruffians to get off the lawn.
But, you and I know it’s not like that.
For many of us, 50 is when our life begins. We start appreciating life more, don’t make as many stupid decisions, have money to travel, have time to do the things we’ve always wanted to, and realize life is good.
I turned 50 last year, and it was the best year of my life. The road to 51 was a little rockier, but still good compared to the rest of my life. I’m working and making money, I learned to deal with my mental illness more healthily, I’m finally taking responsibility for myself, and hell, I’m a new father again!
If you saw me, you wouldn’t think I’m almost 51. The only wrinkles I have are the bags under my eyes, and although I have very little hair on top, my beard is lush and only has a respectable touch of grey.
I feel good about everything in my life and know my life is just beginning!
Why do people think 50 is old? All I ask is you take a look at some of the famous people that turned 50 last year. Sure, they’re celebrities and can afford plastic surgery, but just look at them!

That is a whole lot of beautiful people! Now, I think I look good, but I don’t look Gerard Butler good.
But don’t we all look like we are at the top of our game? Do any of us look like we are ready to retire to a rocker on the front porch?
50 is the new 20! We’re smarter than 20-year-olds and have experience on our side. We are starting businesses, becoming influencers, blogging, writing, and raising hell wherever we go!
We know this time in our lives is just the beginning, so we are making long-term goals and crushing them. We know more than anyone that life is a marathon, not a sprint, and we still have to pound out quite a few miles before the finish line.
But Jason! What if I’m over 50, and I do feel like life is over?
Until I look in the mirror in the morning, I still think I’m 21. What’s going on in your life that you think your life is over? Did you go through a divorce? Are you having medical problems? Are you having a mid-life crisis?
Fifty years is not a long time. I can still remember my first day of school, the first time I put a worm on a hook, and my first bike. I’ve been mentally ill my entire life and tried to kill myself four times, but I still want to live another 100 years!
Why so many excuses? If you’re only 50 and you feel like you can’t go on, you need to get some fun back in your life! You need to absorb some love. Take a trip. Better yet, quit your job and travel the world as a digital nomad! Stop thinking you have one foot in the grave.
You’re only halfway through life.
I can tell you’re feeling it now. I’ve got you thinking in a new way, and instead of wondering if your life is winding down, you’re ready to crank it up!
We have too much life left and so many stories to write. We have people to do and places to see. There are foods in the world we haven’t tried yet — let’s try them all! I bet you’ve never watched the sunrise over a volcano. Come here to the Philippines, and we will watch it together!
Let’s stop being a defeatist and start enjoying the best years of our life!
Are you with me, old-timers?
