I Think I Have a Crush on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez‏

It’s not for the reason you think.

If you know me at all, you might have figured out that I hate talking about politics. Don’t get me wrong — I stand up for what I know is right, but I choose to ignore the troll-fights that devolve into name-calling and harsh words. The times I have tried to stand up to hateful people have not ended well for my mental state, so I prefer to leave the nasty debates to people with a thinker skin.

Facebook has become a real battlefield and the people I call friends who have the moxie to stand up to the incels and Trumpers have way more patience than my mixed-up mind will ever be able to muster.

I also follow a few political-type people on Twitter, but only because most of the time, I like what they have to say. One of those people is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez‏ (@AOC). With gems like this, how could I not like her:

I’ve heard a lot of people badmouthing her. Most of them are Republicans, which makes me think she is doing something right. She is upsetting the very people who should be ashamed and upset. She is angering a lot of Democrats as well, but only the ones who don’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

For a Democrat, and for someone coming into politics as young as she is, she is doing a fantastic job — she has made a huge impact in a very short time. AOC has been stirring the pot, and the vicious attacks against her only convince me that what she is doing and saying will only help America and it's citizens.

It is very hard for me to state my opinion about politics because I am not as informed as I should be. If somebody attacked me for standing up for AOC, I probably couldn’t form an adequate response.

I’ve been out of the country for too long. Yes, I am still an American citizen, but distance has made me want to ignore what’s going on “over there.” What I have kept up with makes me scared for my home country. I’ve seen the damage that Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, and his cronies in the Republican party are causing, and it disgusts me.

I should be more aware of what is going on in this world, but I only have so much attention, and I’ve been spending it on my family and my writing.

It’s not fair that all I hear is negative news.

That is why I’ve been following what AOC is doing. Sure she tweets about the bad:

Yes, Trump is an idiot.

She always finds the good in situations:

She speaks…I listen!

I don’t say I have a crush on her because she is a beautiful woman, I say it because I like her spunk and determination. She is acting as we need politicians to act. She isn’t making the excuse that she can’t do anything because she is new to politics and young. She is making people listen. She is doing what needs to be done.

In committees, she asks the questions that should be asked. Take Mark Zuckerburg, for instance. She didn’t bow down and go soft because he is rich and powerful, she went for the throat.

“So, you don’t know if I’ll be able to do that [Run ads with obvious lies]? Do you see a potential problem here with a complete lack of fact-checking on political advertisements?”

On Twitter, she stands up for herself against the trolls who call her stupid and against the misogyny and racism in society. She knows how to make an argument and destroys the people who think she is window-dressing and can be intimidated.

I am going to keep an eye on her. One day, she may run for President, and if she keeps her nose clean and stays on the path she is walking, I will vote for her.

Until then, I think I like Bernie Sanders. He is what we deserve after the Trump shitshow. Like AOC, Sanders is a doer, and I know he is just what the country needs right now.
